In this assignment the task is to learn and understand how to operate CAD/CAM software. First steps will be creating a simple 3D model on Autodesk Inventor software and then produce a fully dimensioned orthographic drawing. Next stage will be exporting and importing files from one software to another: from Inventor to Delcam FeatureCAM.

Through the dialog box I select a type of file I want, and it is a DXF file format. Then I browse for my complex.dxf file.

In these two steps I’m aligning the XY axis of the imported geometry to the axis of the CNC milling machine. It needs to be aligned to the working axis of the machining tool.

Here I can choose different shapes of stock I will be using to machine the part. I will select a “Block”.

Here I have to select the size of the billet which I will be using to machine the part. I choose an option compute stock size from the size of the part. Program automatically adds 2mm on each side so there will be no flat edges on the part, it will be fully machined.

This is where I locate the datum position for the block. This datum position is the XYZ position for the cutter paths.

In the beginning from this dialog box I select what has to be machined, and it is a pocket.

As we see for finishing the same tool will be used, I confirm this tool. This will save the tool change time when machining.

Here I select the machining strategies, for this operation I want only to drill the holes.

In this dialog box I can see that FeatureCAM was unable to find a tool for this tool parameters, so I choose the option to select another tool.

From the new feature menu I select what I want to machine, and it’s a boss.

In this dialog box I see the suggested tools for this operation and I accept this.

Post processor is an internal module of the CAM software. An independent post processor solution can support multiple CAM software.

A CNC machine can’t function without a program. So what are the methods for the data transfer from a CAD/CAM package into a CNC machine tool. First let’s start from historical part of data storage:
