Čepkeliu National Reserve is the biggest reserve in the country. It is situated in Alytus county, Varėna municipality. It was established in 1975 and the size of it is 11212ha. In 1993 the Reserve became a site of international importance when Lithuania has joined the Ramsar convention. Moreover, it is inscribed in European Union protected areas list – Natura 2000, which is focused on preservation of biodiversity and endangered species.
