Sand is a natural product that can be obtained from river, pit. Sea sand can’t be used for tests. It contains salt, which damages the mortar and has organic matters from the sea in it.
Sand can be artificial obtained from crushing hart stones. Sand can be used in mortar and concrete to:
Divide the paste of the binding material to adhere and spread;
Fill up the gap between the building blocks, spread the binding material;
Add density to mortar;
Prevent the shrinkage of the cementing material;
Good quality sand is: chemically inert, not affected by organic and vegetable matters, don’t have any sea salt, have sharp, angular and coarse grains. In civil engineering we also use sand for specific kind of tests: sand equivalent, density, water absorption, etc.
