Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. It was built at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers, surrounded by wooded hills. Vilnius was first mentioned in 1323, when the Grand Duke of Lithuania proclaimed it the capital of the country. Vilnius became one of the largest trade, industrial and cultural centers of the Europe in the 16th Century.
Vilnius is famous for it‘s historical past, monuments, churches and green surroundings. One of the most famous architectural monuments in Vilnius is Vilnius Cathedral, standing at the foot of Gediminas` Hill. It was built on a place where the God of thunder was worshipped. Because of the frequent fires and wars Vilnius Cathedral was rebuilt many times.
