In the third decade of the XXth century when economical, political and cultural life was expanding between Russia and Western Europe, great attention was paid to the improvement of the existing roads and the constructions of the new one. That was necessary as the roads were very important for international and intercity transportation and intercity transportation before the appearance of railways. Transportation of post, soldiers, war ammunition, goods and passengers was executed in carriages. At that time two principal postal routes were built in Lithuania: St Petersburg – Warsaw (1830 – 1836) passing via Pskov, Rezekne, Daugavpils, Zarasai, Utena, Kaunas, Kalvarija, Suwalki with a branch from Marijampolė to Karaliaučius via Kybartai, and the other extending from St Petersburg to Tilžė through Riga (1836 – 1858) crossing Joniškis, Šiauliai, Tauragė. It passed through Kaunas, because that was the shortest way between the capital of the Russian Empire and the capital of former Polish Kingdom. The postal route St Petersburg – Warsaw was the first postal route built in Lithuania.
